Redesigning Courses at UMET Jayuya

During the past semester, 17 faculty members re-designed their courses and implemented the same ones.  Redesigning consists of the technological integration to the process of education – learning.  The Professors who took part of the phase of redesign received several trainings and workshops in technology and redesign; hereby they’re qualified to achieve their goals.  Among the workshops are: Electronic Portfolio, Electronic syllabus, Assessment using rubrics and How to create Blogs. To measure how effective has been the integration of the technology in the courses, it was designed a questionnaire which gathers the students opinion. In the photo provided you can see some of the Professors who attended the workshop “Assessment” using of the interactive and traditional rubrics.

Professional Workshops

At the Metropolitan University, we believe in giving our Faculty members the opportunity to take part in professional workshops outside of Puerto Rico which have helped them in their professional development.  Some of these workshops were:

·  National Conference on Student Recruitment, Marketing,   and Retention – Orlando, FL (julio 2007)

Technology workshops for freshmen students

During the past semester the Learning Center offered technology workshops to freshmen students of subgraduated programs. Among the workshops they received are: Basic Management of the Computer, writing documents with word processor, Electronic presentations, Publisher, navigation in Internet and E-mail use.  These workshops offer students, the opportunity to develop technological skills necessary for the accomplishment of their academic tasks.  These workshops were offered in the “Learning Center” by the Technology Trainer, Mrs. Nancy Vélez Rivera.  Also, each participant received from Title V Project and Metropolitan University an MP4 as a complementary technology tool.  For their benefit they also received a proper workshop on how to use this equipment.  In the photo provided you can appreciate some students who attended the MP4 workshop.

Orientation week

During “Orientation week” students, were organized in a series of workshops and extracurricular activities.  Students who participated during this week, were identified by the lists provided by the office of Integrated Services.  Subsequently, a letter of invitation was sent to them including also, the itinerary of activities in order to let them know in advance of the program.  In addition, phone calls were realized to follow-up the assistance for this week. 

During the week, students also received orientations of Financial aid services, Library, Motivation and Technology Workshops, among others.  Orientations were complemented with artistic presentations and some of these included the concert “Thoughts and Songs” by Tito Auger, ex-member of the renown group “Fiel a la Vega”, also a concert given by group “Paliques”, Africa in the Americas, where the students had the opportunity to learn the origin of several instruments and how they arrive to the Americas.  Finally the week culminated with a Batucada’s presentation, followed by a group of merengue. We know that the students enjoyed each one of the activities during “Orientation Week” and this was demonstrated in their commentaries and evaluations.

Workshop: Managing a Pocket PC

On June 14, 2007 students from Pre College Summer Bridge were given a Pocket PC.  In order to use them, students learned how to save documents, information among other things.  The workshop was also offered by Ms. Nancy Vélez, Technology Trainer.

Workshop: Power Point

Students from Pre-College Summer Bridge, received a power point workshop on June 13, 2007.  During this workshop, students created their own electronic presentation and showed it to their classmates; They used the electronic blackboard to do this.  The workshop was offered by Ms. Nancy Vélez, Technology Trainer.

Workshop: A New Step

On June 13, 2007 Mr. Pedro Ramos from PRATP offered a workshop where he had a dialogue with students about their dreams, strategies to make them possible and how to succeed in college as well in real life.  “To persevere is to succeed” were he’s last words.  The workshop was very emotional.

Workshop: Internet and Microsoft Word

On June 12, 2007 the students from Pre College Summer Bridge received a complete workshop about Internet between 9:00 am – 12:00 noon.  Participants practiced various searches at the “Learning Center”.  During the period of 12:30 pm – 3:00 pm they were  given a Microsoft Word workshop, in which they had the opportunity to create different documents.  Both workshops were given by Mrs. Nancy Vélez, Technology Trainer.

Workshop: Motivation

On june 11, 2007  Mr. Javier H. Rivera gave a motivation workshop for the participants of Pre College Summer Bridge.  All participants experienced a five minute aromatherapy and tips for stress management.

Summer Bridge Participants Receive Materials for the Program

On June 11, 2007 each participant of the second Pre College Summer Bridge, received the materials that will complement the workshops, conferences and classes that are programmed.  Some ot the materials distributed among them were: a notebook for each class; spanish, english and math, textbook for each class, calculator, pen drive, dictionary and others.
